(Unclassified - GLC) Mrs. Freedman, in the office of Senator 25X1 Dewey Bartlett, called to say the Senator would like to take us up on our invitation for a breakfast/briefing at the Agency. The Senator if, interested in getting background briefings on Soviet weapons programs and., as a newly appointed member of the CIA Subcommittee, would like to get. a background briefing on the Agency in general. Mrs. Freedman said the Senator would not be available on 4, 5, 9, 10 or 11 June. I told her I would check the Director's calendar and be back in touch. 9. (Unclassified - GLC) Called Fritz Schwarz, Counsel of the Senate Select Committee, and told him we were having considerable difficulty in, correcting the transcripts of the Director's testimony before the Committee to date particularly in view of numerous errors and garbles on the part of the shorthand reporters. Schwarz said he' was aware of these problems with the transcripts and said there was no great rush in getting the corrections in. CONFIDENTI, report. I passed this information on to 25x1 10. I called Bill Hogan, House Armed Services Committee staff, who agreed with my position that it would be best if GAO merely made reference to these: documents in their report and indicate that they can be made available directly to Chairman Nedzi if he wishes to have access to them. Hogan also pointed out that: only the interim GAO report is due next week. (Unclassified - WPB) Called George Gilbert at OMB to inform him that State had some problems with a sentence in our comments on S. 244 concerning Section (g)(2) and that we were preparing to forward alternative language. He said he appreciated being alerted, although he himself saw no problem with the language as it was. 8. (Confidential - LLM) Accompanied Mr. Warner to a meeting at State with Messrs. Emerson Brown, Bill Jones and Gene Malmborg.. to discuss State's draft position with respect to our unauthorized disclosure legislation. In a constructive session at State representatives conceded to drop references to section (g)(2) as possibly placing restrictions on intelligence information from our ambassadors as being contentious without due cause and we agreed that the Director probably would not object to dropping certain language from the Speaker letter concerning problems with legislation. encompassing a larger class of persons than those covered by the proposed legislation. On the general timing of the proposal it was agreed that it would perhaps be best to table the matter at a USIB meeting and in that connection we said we would advise OMB of this development in connection with OMB imposed requirements for departmental reports back to OMB. 9. (Confidential - LLM) Clark McFadden, General Counsel, Senate Armed Services Committee, called to report that Pat Holt, Chief of Staff, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had called Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel and Staff Director, Senate Armed Services Committee, concerning the possible- termination of the NID and that as a result the matter had been discussed with. Chairman John C. Stennis (D. , Miss. ), Senate Armed Services Committee. He feels this will be a tremendous loss to the Committee but would not want: to do anything to. make things more difficult for the Agency. I thanked McFadden for letting us know and informed him that the NID would be continued through the recess, the matter was being reconsidered and we would notify him before the fact if it is terminated. 10. (Secret - LLM) Accompaniedi OCI, to a meeting with Pat Holt, Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff, to, explain the necessity for terminating distribution of the NID to the Hill and to offer the Weekly Summary and other support as a substitute. He said. the membership would have to be advised of the circumstances and would be t,nha_nnv_ but their criticism would not be directed towards the Agency. 9. (Unclassified - LLM) In the absence of David Keaney, Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff, left with Linda Puglisi, Secretary, a copy of the Law of the Sea Country Study - Canada. 10. (Confidential - LLM) Jack Blum, Subcommittee on Multinational Corporations, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called in connection with the Subcommittee's current investigation into the payments by Gulf Oil Company for political purposes in Korea, and asked if we could arrange to have someone come up and brief him on the political situation in Korea and whatever else we might have bearing on the topic under investigation. He also would like to know the role of Tung Sun Park, what is his connection., and how he relates to Park Chung Hee. I told Blum we would be hack in touch.
