I ILIAISON At instructions, sent via courier to Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, I-louse Armed Services Committee, a draft letter to Comptroller General Staats from Chairman Lucien Ned::i. concerning the sale of HEARINGS Tool-, a call from Jim. Michi 25X1 of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Administrative Practice and Procedure . He reminded me of an earlier talk with as e about an interview of the current Chief BAB/OTS, and where the request stood. In answer to my question, he said the talk would be informal and will be limited solely to the destruction of records on CIA's drug and other human experimentation programs. 'He said the Subcommittee had information that Mr was knowledgeable of the matter. I said preliminary discussions around the office indicate that such a meeting might be possible but that I would have to clear it with my boss as well as determine the legal implications. COMMENT: Discussion with OTS and ORD evoked no objections. Mr. Cary will check with OGC and/or on the legal implications in connection with the use immunity granted by the Senate Select Committee to Dr. Gottlieb. 25X1A 3.1 LIAISON In response to his call last 25X1A week to I called Hite McLean, on the Senate Judiciary Committee staff. McLean had inquired whether had ever been a CIA employee as laimed. McLean said Senator James Eastland (D. , Miss.) personally intended to set up a meeting with CIA on this matter and that the Senator would be in touch with our office upon his return next week. 4. I LIAISON John Walsh, Investigator for Senate Government operations Subcommittee on Permanent Investigations, called concerning a request the Subcommittee made for information on the foreign activities of a particular individual under investigation. I thanked Slatinshek for the assistance. Later Slatinshek advised that Chairman Lucien Nedzi (D., Mich. sent a letter requesting GAO to review the matter and Bill Hogan, Counsel of the Committee, advised that the letter was being picked up by GAO today. 6. I I LIAISON Called Keith Kennedy, Legislative Assistant to Senator Mark Hatfield (R., Ore.), and he said they had no further information on the so-called internal directive issued during the Eisenhower Administration involving the use of missionaries. I told him that a search of our records had failed to disclose any information on this subject and that they would be receiving a reply to this effect. 25X1A in addition to himself he intended to have I OCI, present at the briefing. 25X1A 7. I (INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING Mike Van Dusen, Consultant, Special Subcommittee on Investigations, House International Relations Committee, called concerning the upcoming briefing bf the Subcommittee on Tuesday, 21 October on the Middle East and he suggested that maps and charts would be helpful to the members,. In response to his query, I said we would not object if professional staff members of other subcommittees, for whom he could vouch and who had an appropriate clearance, attend the session but that our only concern was that there not be leakage or attribution of the briefing. He mentioned the staffers he was including: Mr. Ward, Minority Counsel of the full Committee for Representative William Broomfield (R., Mich.); George Berdes and Jack Brady, both of the House International Relations 25X1A Committee staff. Bennett (D. , Fla. ), regarding the letter from a constituent I told her that the Agency had no information but we were pursuing the matter through liaison with the FBI. She asked for an interim response, which will go forward shortly. 16.1 ILIAISON Spoke with Bill Kclder, on the staff of Representative Don 13. Young (R. , Alaska), in connection with his inquiry of late Friday afternoon about whether the Agency had any information about the crash of a Trans Avia International Airline flight in the vicinity of Adak, Alaska on 22 September 1975. He had also asked whether one of the victims of the crash, was an Agency employee. er c .ec ing with the Office of Personnel, the Office of Security and I DDO, I advised Kelder that based on the information given me I could tell him that the Agency had nothing to do with the Trans Avia. International Airline and, in addition, that 25X1 had never been employed by the Agency.
