4.1 I Called Bill Hogan, House Armed Services
Committee staff, to alert him to the information we had received about Seymour
Hersh's proposed column in the Sunday New York Times having to do with Agency
operations in Chile. I told 'Hogan that from all the indications we had received,
it seemed quite possible that Hersh had obtained his information from someone
who had access to the transcript of the Director's testimony before the Nedzi
Subcommittee on Intelligence on 22 April 1974. In view of the difficulty we
have had from Representative Michael Harrington on this subject, it appeared
quite likely he was the prime candidate. I told Hogan we were anxious to review
the transcript of that hearing and since the only copy is the one the Committee
has we wondered if.we could borrow it back to check and see just what was
said in that session. We borrowed the transcript from Hogan and returned it
to him later in the day.
5.1 I Called Guy McConnell, Senate Appropriations
Committee staff, Ed Braswell, Senate Armed Services Committee staff, and
Ralph Preston, House Appropriations Committee staff, to alert them to the
information we had received'. about a column we understood Seymour Hersh has
written for publication in the Sunday New York Times on the subject of Agency
operations in Chile. I told the staffers we had some suspicion that the source
of the information Hersh, had received was Representative Michael Harrington
but, of course, this would be difficult if not impossible to prove. I told them
I merely wanted to alert them to the fact that this article was coming out.
