Talked to Bill Van Ness, Chief Counsel, Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, with regard to the questions raised by Senator Howard M. Metzenbaum (D. , Ohio). In brief, Van Ness suggested the Agency might either have someone standby to testify in executive session or the Agency could respond to questions to Van Ness himself so that he in turn could respond in executive session. I told Van Ness that I was sure we would much prefer the latter course of providing the information to him for use in executive session. See Mr. Cary's journal item. 12. Met with Roger Mott, Special Assistant to Representative Samuel S. Stratton (D. , N. Y. ), and reviewed with him background of this case. Mott will file the correspondence. If any further information is desired by Representative Stratton, Mott will call me. 13. Talked to George Berdes, on the staff of the Subcommittee on National Security Policy and Scientific Developments, House Foreign Affairs Committee, and after checking with Mr. Duckett's secretary, scheduled a briefing for Wednesday, 11 December, at 10:00 a. m. on SALT violations and agreements. 14. (Confidential - GLC) Accompanied the Director and Messrs. Nelson an to a briefing of the House Appropriations Committee Special Group. See Memorandum for Record for details. 15. Met with Representative Chet Holifield to tell him how much we appreciated the support which he and Representatives John N. Erlenborn and William S. Moorhead had given us in fighting presentative Bella Abzug's proposed amendment to abolish the CIA exemption from the Right of Privacy legislation (see Memo for Record). 16. Attempted to see Representatives Johan Erlenborn and William Moorhead but they had left town :for the holiday and I will try to reach them on Monday. I Page 4 Met with Representative Albert Quie to discuss his letter to the Director askin for comments on a letter the Congressman had received from STATOTHR Minnesota, regarding allegations of CIA involvement in activities in Northern Ireland. I showed Quie a copy of the Director's classified letter of 26 October 19:74 to Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee of House Armed Services Committee, on this subject. I explained to Quie our reluctance to give him an unclassified denial of this allegation, which he could appreciate. He added, however, that he had gotten in a jam in his district in denying Agency involvement in Chile, later to find that in fact we were. He said he had relied on assurances from someone (not from the Agency). I made it clear to the Congressman that the Agency was not involved in the coup in Chile and the statement to that effect was still accurate. We discussed the possibility of his getting a copy of Chairman Nedzi's response to the similar inquiry which might have been useful to him in replying to McGovern. I told Quie I would look into this and be back in touch with him. CIA INTERNAL USE ONLY SE cR E r? 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/09/30 : CIA-RDP76M00527R000700150066-6
