MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: National Archives and Records Service Archivist
1. During the past several years, as had several
conversations with officers of the Nationa and Records
Service, including Dr. Rhoads and Dr. Campbell the Archivist and
Deputy Archivist of the United States respectively. Dr. Rhoads has
indicated keen interest in providing the CIA with a suitable
candidate to perform the CIA Archivist function. He has indicated
flexibility as to the manner in which the individual nominated
would actually be assigned, i.e., reimbursable detail, or reassign-
ment to CIA.
2. One individual whose name has been mentioned is
,GS-14 archivist who apparently is on the
threshold of being promoted to GS-15. To the best of our knowledge
no one has spoken'to with regard to possible appoint-
ment as a CIA Archivist. it o ows then that we do not know
whether would entertain a detail, reassignment as a
staff employee of -this Agency, or appointment as a contract employee.
Dr. Rhoads made clear to that he is not anxious to lose
and that he would welcome back even if
were appointed CIA Archivist.
3. Among other possibilities mentioned tol was that
perhaps either of two retired former NARS archivists might be recep-
tive to short term (perhaps six months) contract employment for CIA
to initiate a formal archives program. These individuals are
