the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, whom I briefed on a recent
significant development in the Middle East.
13. - JGO) Met with Sam Scott, Minority Counsel,
25X1 Senate Subcommittee on internal Securityz with regard to the request from J. G.
Sourwine, Subcommittee Counsel, for a possible staff interview wit
I I I told Scott that we still have no objection to a staff interview and
would be pleased to assist the Subcommittee in arranging it if one is desired
at this time.
14. PLC) Discussed with Sandy Blakey, in the office
of Senator Jacob avi s . , N. Y. ), a suggested reply to a letter from a
constituent who questioned Senator Javit's vote confirming the nomination
of Mr. Colby. The constituent was concerned as to Mr. Colby's role in the
pacification program in Vietnam, which the constituent alleged was a program
of torture and imprisonment. Blakey felt that the suggested reply clearly
answered the questions raised by the constituent.

16. LLM) Gary Vaughn, in the office of Representative
Michael Harrington (D. , Mass.), called and asked if Mr. Colby had, as had
Jack Kubisch, Bureau of Inter-American Affairs (State), an unclassified
prepared statement for his recent briefing of the Inter-American Affairs
Subcommittee. I told Vaughn that Mr. Colby's briefing was classified, and
it was rot our policy to have unclassified prepared statements. In response 25X1
to my query, Vaughn said he was asking for members of the press and
