Approved or Release 2006/09/25 : CIA-RDP75g00380R000200090054-6 Mr. L. James Kron?eld Foreign Operations and Government Information,Subcommittee Rayburn House Office Building Room 0 731-0 Washington, D.C. 20515 4 September 1973 Dear fir. Kronfeld, In the course of my continuing research dealing with the World War 2 "Liberator" pistol and its distribution I have come up against a facet of wartime history that has apparently been suppressed by the U.5. Government since 1944. Elefore pursuing the matter in greater depth I have taken this opportunity to contact your office since other government agencies have failed to respond to my questions concerning this wartime operation. Basically the information is as follows. Cometirne during 1944 until the end of World Liar 2 was contacted and recruited by the Office of strategic Services (09S) to head up a group of aircraft to drop~:arms and supplies to the Norwegian resistance forces who were fighting the Germans. This mission operated nut of Leuchars, Scotland using black 8-24 bombers which would land in Sweden after their mission and he serviced by US \AF ground crews for a to rn--around flight to Leuchars. The mission was called "30th Group" or " 30th Troop Carrier." The group contribut:!d immoasurebly to the final victory in Llorld Llar 2 yet has never been mentioned in any public documentaries dealing with the IJA11F in World liar 2. I do not want to open up any " Pandora's Box" but would like to know from your office if the information described above now comes under the purview of Section 552 of Title 5 of the U.'. Code, Freedom of Information Law? ,Almost 30 years have passed since this operation took place and it is doubtful that its disclosure would present a grave threat or embarassment to the United ;totes. More important, however, is thp fact that this particular wartime operation would receive the full credit and recognition it richly des:rves. The files dealing with this wartime mission are in the hands of the CIA. Whether they will give you an answer is rpen to speculation. I Would very much oppreciatereceiving any and all information you are able to obtain through your inquiries, concerning this "38 Group" and whether or not the information is still considered tno sensitive to be published. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of writing. R.',1. ISPCH Approved For Release 2006/09/25 : CIA-RDP75B0038OR000200090054-6
