Mr. L. .7a e Kronfeld

Washington, D.C. 20515
4 September 1973
Dear Mr. Kronfeld,
In the course of my continuing rdsearch dealing with the World
War 2 "Liberator" pistol and its disttihution I have come up against
a facet of wartime history that has apparently been suppressed by
the U.S. Government since 1^44. Oefore pursuing the matter in greater
depth I have taken this opportunity to contact your office since other
government agencies have failed to re?epond to my questions concerning
this wartime operation.
Basically the information is as follows. Sometime during 1944 until
the end of World War 2 was contacted and recruited by
the Office of Strategic Services P95) to head up a grnul'p. T' aircraft
to drop arms and supplies to the Norwegian resistance forces who were
fighting the Germans. This mission operated nut of Leuchars, Scotland
using black R-24 bombers which would land in Sweden after their mission
and he serviced by U.S`1AF ground crews for a tui,n-around flight to
Leuchars. The mission was called "38th Group" or " 38th Troop Carrier."
The group contributed immeasurably to the final victory in World Mar 2
yet has never been mentioned in any puhlic documentaries dealing with
the U'.,AAF in World .:Iur 2.
I do not want to open up any " Pandora's Box" but would like to
know from your office if the information described above now comes
under the purview of Section 552 of Title 5 of the U.S. Code, Freedom
of Information Law? Almost 30 years have passed since this operation
took place and it is doubtful that its disclosure would present a grave
threat or emburassment to the United States. ri"nre important, however,
is th~~ fact that this particular wartime operation would receive the
full credit and recognition it richly deserves.
The files dealing with this w,jartirrtie mission are in the hands of the
CIA. Whether they will give you an answer is rpen to speculation. I
would very much appreciatereCeiving any and all information you are
able to obtain through your inquiries, concerning this "38 Group" and
whether or not the information is still considered too sensitive to
be published. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of writing.
Sincerely,
