4. Talked to Dr. John Brady, House
Foreign Affairs Committee staff, concerning the Jack Anderson column
this morning. See Memorandum for the Record.
5. In the absence of Frank Slatinshek,
Chief Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, I conveyed to him through
his secretary word that we were about to brief Chairmen Rosenthal and
Hamilton, et al, of the Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the present
Greek situation.
6. of OCI, and I met
informally with Chairmen Benjamin Rosenthal, of the Subcommittee on
Europe, and Lee Hamilton, of the Subcommittee on Near East and South
Asia, of .Mouse Foreign Affairs Committee, together with minority
member Peter Frelinghuysen, and staff consultants Cliff Hackett and
Mike Van Dusen for an off-the-record discussion of the Greek situation.
I reviewed political events during the '60's culminating in the Colonels'
coup and the King's abortive counter coup, while summarized 25X1A
subsequent developments and spoke of future prospects. I took
advantage of the occasion to refute allegations of Agency complicity in
the coup of April 1967 and Agency support for the present regime. The
Committee members were complimentary and Chairman Rosenthal in
particular, who had previously expressed skepticism about the Agency
role, remarked that he thought the briefing was a very fair and informative
analysis of the present situation.
In response to his earlier question to
I talked to Dr. John Brady, House Foreign
Affairs Committee staff, and told him that Boon Tai is the Vice President
of the Shan State Progress Party which is closely identified with the
militia. I also asked Brady if he would tell Representative Wolff (D. , N. Y. )
at the first opportunity that he had raised the question of 125X1A
