IDEALIST 1. The IDEALIST program maintained an Operationally Read Y25X1 status with the capability of accomplishing the assigned mission: "To and hostile territory, or peripheral reconnaissance on a world-wide basis in support of intelligence objectives of the United States. " Two detachments, one at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and one at provide a rapid reaction, covert capability to respond to fast developing world- wide contingency situations. With its organizational structure, facilities, and equipment in being and in operation, IDEALIST becomes a national asset with an inherent value in its ability to fulfill national requirements. Other projects which the IDEALIST resources have supported a. Hurricane Base Line Survey: This was a continuation of the project to provide a photographic base line of the southern United States for future hurricane damage assessment. b. Snow Survey: Provided photography for California water resources survey for the Department of Commerce. c. RED DOT: Continued to support the Color Task Force with photographic coverage of selected targets in CONUS. This provides comparison of color and black and white photography and assists in determining usefulness of various filters and film emulsions. d. Atmospheric Tests: These NRO directed missions were flown in support of photographic testing in New Mexico. e. Earthquake Photo: IDEALIST resources provided photographic coverage of the damage caused by the earthquake in 25, Southern California during February 1971. Approved 0 9325-71 Page 7 9. Overflight Ban: We continue to operate with the 40 Committee from the Chinese mainland. Thus, the intelligence collection effort is restriction requiring U-2 flights to remain at least 20 nautical miles limited to those facilities which can be photographed from a stand off position. 2.
