Air Photograpi a. Very inadequate coverage for intelligence and operational purposes; spotty but good quality; approximately 12 percent of Bulgaria and 20 percent of Rumania south of 45030'Nj largely limited to industrial and urban areas, the coastal areas of Rumania and the Greek and Turkish borders. b. Captured German photography covering wide coastal areas of Rumania and section north of Ploesti; U. S. photography for principle industrial centers., oil fields., major cities and ports and Greek border; photo analysis underway since 1954 for a few industrial areas;.. port facilities and oil refineries; major part of available photography unexploited. c. Little or no air photography for Yugoslav border and rail line through central Bulgaria; Bulgarian coast scantily covered. Map Coverage a. Bulgarian large-scale maps (1:25,000)., covering northwestern and southern parts of Bulgaria and areas centering on Sofiya and Varna, are considered reliable; Bulgarian originals issued in 1930'a and German its during War. Bulgarian originals at lt50,004 scale reliable,, covering same areas and parts of Macedonia. Bulgarian maps at 1:100,000 are completely inadequate and out of date but cover entire country. Seventy-five percent of towns over 10C COO population covered by pre-war town plans of variable reliability, b. Rumanian large-scale maps (2:20,,000) are of very poor reliability and quality and completely inadequate for fire control; cover approximately one-third of the Rumanian area, largely complete along Danube and Bucurepti; complete coverage of area at 1:100.,000 scale but of very poor reliability and quality. Town plans available for all major towns and ports but deficient in detail and out of date. Unavailable maps include a fear sheets at 1:5?,000 scale in central Bulgaria and along Yugoslav border and a fear sheets at 1:20,000 scale issued during World War II, coverinc Danube Delta and area around Bucuregti.. d. Map coverage for northern two-thirds of Bulgaria completely unsatigfactory and inadequate for fire control. No mpg adequate for fire control in Rumanian area. III. Geographic Studies Fair quality generalized studies of terrain conditions are available in open sources.
