NEWSCASTER: "Senator Wayne Morse has called for
the resignation of the Central Intelligence Agency's new
Director, Richard Helms. The Oregon Democrat is unhappy
because Helms lauded a newspaper editorial which attacked
Senator Fulbright, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

for writing the letter which endorsed a St. Louis Globe Democrat
editorial describing Fulbright as 'crafty' Fulbright himself
doesn't go along with Morse's demand, neither does Senate Dem-
ocratic Leader Mike Mansfield, he says Helms made a mistake
and he faced up to it. And as Mansfield put it, we all mistakes,
~f we had to resign when we make mistakes, the whole Senate would
have to resign.
"In his attack on Helms, Senator Morse criticized the entire
CIA setup, he says it's becoming increasingly active within Amer-
ican education and 'tries to influence public opinion with planted
stories and articles."
