MR. JOHN E. O'GARA
John E . O'Gara was born in 1895 in Hanover, New Hamphsi re. During the first
World a e served-as Ensign (T) U.S. Navy aboard the USS Virginia on convoy
escort duty. After graduation from Dartmouth (B.S. 1918, M.C.S. 1920), he was
employed by a Nashua, New Hampshire, paper company as a production planner. In
1922 he became associated with Macy's, New York, (unit of the R. H. Macy & Company,
Inc.) in their Management Methods Department. In 1935, after 13 years of service
with that organization, he was appointed General Manager and Vice President. During
World War II he served as a colonel in the U. S. Army -- first, in the Army Service
Force 11942-441, then, as the Deputy Director of the Office of Strategic Services
(1944-45). At the end of the war Mr. O'Gara returned to his work with R. H. Macy
& Co., but in October of 1949 he left that organization to accept an appointment
with the Department of State as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Economic
Affairs. In January of this year, he joined CIA as Assistant Deputy Director of
Administration.
