Neil Strawser; "The newly appointed Director of the Central
Intelligence Agency, Richard Helms, says tonight that 'I know
we've been criticized a lot, but I don't believe a lot of it
to be at all fair.' 'All toll,' says career man Helms, 'I
think we've done a fine job over the years.' Helms has been
with the CIA since its founding and was its Deputy Director until
today when President Johnson made the surprise announcement that
he was replacing Admiral William Rayborn as Director, Rayborn
resigning after just 14 months with. the agency.
"The appointment of Helms seems to have drawn immediate
approval from colleagues at the agency,where it has been reported
there has been considerable unhappiness with. Admiral Rayborn."
