(Internal Use Only - JGO) I talked briefly with Mr. Lou Conein, BN'DD, who is scheduled to meet with John Brady and Bob Boyer, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, on Monday morning concerning material from Alfred W. McCoy's book "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia" which is attributed by the author to an interview with Mr. Conein. This call was in response to several calls by Conein earlier in the day tol 1 for guidance.. I told Conein that Messrs. Brady and Boyer were under a charter from Chairman Morgan to make a firsthand on-the-spot investigation of the various charges in the McCoy book. I told him that he would not find them hostile in any regard and that he should feel free to be as cordial as possible in responding to their queries. Nt2,YOG, and Osborn, D/S, have been advised. JGO) In response to his call, I met with Jack Brady, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, and after checking with ivision, gave him telephone numbers for Lou Conein. This was by way of followup to a suggestion made in yesterday's meeting with Agency representatives that he might want to contact Mr. Conein directly concerning the statements made by Mr. McCoy with regard to interviews with Mr. Conein. Mr. Brady told me in confidence that the staff report will be classified secret. The report is in response to Chairman Morgan's personal re uest. See Journal of 6 September 1972. Messrs. Warner, OGC, an have been advised. 6. JGO) Received a call from Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, who told me that Chairman Nedzi would like a briefing on Monday at 10:30 a. m. In Slatinshek's opinion the briefing would be an updating of the previous briefings given the CIA. Subcommittee on the world situation. He suggested, however, that it would be well if we called Nedzi directly to identify any particular items he might want covered. 7.1 ~ JMM) Met with Bill Woodruff, Counsel, Senate Appropriations Committee, whom I briefed on a current question of withdrawal from the Reserves. He said he would take this up with Chairman McClellan the first of the week, but could not predict how McClellan would react since this was the first time such matters had been brought to his attention. 8. JMM) Met with Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel, Senate Armed Services Committee, whom I briefed on recent developments regarding e said maybe Chairman Stennis will want an update briefing on Soviet strategic weapons in the next week or two. I I John Stratton, Investigator, House Internal25X1 Security Committee, called and asked if we could provide him with the radio frequency and range of Radio Hanoi. He said they were interested in this information in connection with the statements by Jane Fonda. The request was relayed to FB1S. 14. - LLM) David Martin, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee staff, called to request Agency assistance in reviewing testimony to be presented by General Walt on 13 September to the Subcommittee on the world drug situation. He said the material would be available for pickup by us at 2:30 on 8 September and he would appreciate our comments by noon on Monday. I told Martin that we wish to be cooperative wherever possible, but that this was a very short deadline and I would have to check on the availability of personnel to handle this task and would let him know the outcome. I called OCI who a reed that we should try to be as helpful as possible 25X1 an said that in his office would review the material and that he would contact to alert him. I placed a call to Martin to advise him of this and to ask what specific topics would be involved, but I did not receive a return call. Martin said the Committee had been asked for the source of a statement in a committee print, "Soviet Intelligence and Security Services, 1964-70, " which was not footnoted. The statement was in the introduction and attributed to Khrushchev a remark that espionage is needed only by aggressors and that the Soviet Union does not engage in espio on't intend to attack anyone.
