3. (Confidential - JGO) Received a call from Mr. William Van Ness,
Chief' Counsel, Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, who told
me tkiat he is setting u~p hearings for Senator Jackson (D. , Wash,) on the
world oil situation. Present schedule will be for hearings in executive
session on 11 and 12 December and Van Ness asked if the Director could be
available to lead off in an off-the-record session, if necessary, with an
intelligence briefing on the world oil situation with emphasis on the Middle
East. Mr. Van Ness told me that a formal letter requesting the Director's
appearance is in preparation but will probably not be relayed before
torno:rrow afternoon. I thanked Van Ness for the advance information and told
him I. would relay the informal request. He noted in closing that contact
has been made with the White House to set up a number of Cabinet level
witnesses for possible open hearings on this subject. Van Ness suggested
that I: call him tomorrow afternoon when the determination should be finalized
on releas+s of the letters to the prospective witnesses. 25x1
