Dear Allen:
1./
August 7, 1953
Thank you very much for your note 1 August. I believe
that your secretary probably told you that I called you in Wash-
ington last Tuesday as soon as I learned that your letter had
come to my office in New York. I was only in Washington for two
days and I was leaving for Norfolk about an hour after I called
so there was no opportunity to stop by much to my regret. Next
week I am going on vacation until September so I imagine we shall
have to defer our discussion until then. I do appreciate your
point of view and I am sure you know that, like you, my objective
is the interest of the country.
I hope you will have a very pleasant time
and do not work too hard.
All best wishes.
Sincerely,
/s/ HANSON BALDWIN

PERSONAL
Dear Hanson:
I read with great interest your article in the New York TIMES
of July 30th. When you are next in Washington I should welcome an
opportunity to sit down and talk the matter over with you in more
detail.
It just happened that I read the article after returning from
two hours on the Hill with the Subcommittee of the Appropriations
Committee, which deals with the Armed Services--not, as a matter of
fact, on our appropriations as that is already settled for the coming
year--but to go over our work in various parts of the world before
the Committee members leave for the inspection trips abroad which
many of them are making during the recess. This shows that there
is more of the type of contact you advocate, and I favor, than is
generally realized. Still there is undoubtedly room for improve-
ment in Congressional relationships but possibly this can be worked
out through existing machinery without a new formalized Committee,
which has certain disadvantages I will mention when I see you.
In any event, I could benefit by your comments. If you can
give me personally any information about "clucks" or joyriders
that are with us now, it would be very helpful. Undoubtedly we
have them but it is not always easy to find them.
I am off on August 9th to be gone for the SI-AT
balance of the month but, if you are not in Washington in the mean-
time, I hope we can get together soon after I return.
