Friday - 15 July 1966
1. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Delivered to Senator John Stennis
a letter to him as Chairman of the Select Committee on Standards and
Conduct on the Senator Dodd case explaining how we were approached by
Senator Dodd's people to furnish information about Agency cooperation
with Senator Dodd prior to his Germany trip. The Senator was appreciative
of having the background on this and felt this was an appropriate way to
handle the matter.
2. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Talked briefly with Senator Stuart
Symington concerning the Senate vote yesterday. He indicated that at
a very early date he would like to talk in more detail with me and with
the Director.
3. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Talked with Representative Glen
Lipscomb who requested that I check to ascertain if there was any
unclassified information regarding shipping from Czechoslovakia to
North Vietnam. I said I would look into this and advise.
4. (Confidential - JSW) Talked with Bob Michaels, House
Appropriations Committee staff, who inquired if we had any contracts
with also discussed with him the possibility of
a portion of our budget being on a no-year basis. He expressed his
reluctance to open up this question with the Subcommittee in the absence
of strong and specific justification. We discussed possible middle
grounds to accomplish the same purpose. He will hold off further
discussions with Mr. Woodruff until we are back in touch with him.
5. (Confidential - JSW) Talked with Bill Darden, Senate Armed
Services Committee staff, reviewing yesterday's events. I also raised
with him the question of an early meeting of the Subcommittee on the Agency
budget. He stated he had raised this several times with the Chairman
and felt it was appropriate to do so a ain. Mr. Darden said he had also 25X1
had another discussion wit Fnd indicated that he found
this one very heavy going.
