'Subversion' Inquiry at Rutgers

'Genovese case, called today for
a Congressional investigation of

? incent J. Murphy, the long-
time head of the .state labor
movement, attacked the uni-
versity and its leadership in his
annual report to the fifth con-
vention of the state American
Federation of Labor .and Con-
gress of Industrial Organiza-
tions.
Citing the case of Assistant
Prof. Eugene Genovese, who has
publicly supported the Commu-
nist cause in Vietnam, Mr.
Murphy told the 1,590 delegates
meeting at the Robert Treat
Hotel here:
"As long as Genovese and his
ilk continue in the employment
of Rutgers, our state university
will be degraded by their pres-
ence throughout the country."

nounced the president of the
university, Dr. Mason Gross,
charging that he.had "definite-
ly shown a total' lack of leader-
ship."
"We are not lawyers, and, do
not know the legal definition
of treason or traitors," Mr.
Murphy continued, "but we can
publicly denounce those in our
midst who call for our defeat.
I call upon all members of Con-
gress form New Jersey to in-
stitute an Investigation of the
conditions at Rutgers in order
to determine whether or not
there is an active program of
subversion going on at the uni-
versity."
