' Tribune Staff Writer
An officer of the University of
,NO(re Dame. student - govern-
:tent, which co-ordinates activi-
ties of the campus chapter of the
National Student Assn., today
:said, he was struck by the "iro-
ny'? in the disclosure that the
.NSA has accepted Central Intel-
ligence Agency funds.
The student, Thomas Conos-
centi, said the irony comes from
the "leftist image" he felt the
'organization had projected dur-
ing the early 1950's.
"Maybe it was just that, an
iinage," he said.
Conoscenti is administrative
vice-president of student govern-
ment. He said that James Fish,
:president of the student body,
will make an official statement
tonight at a regular meeting of
?the student Senate.
Helps Students
According to Conoscenti, the
NSA helps American students to
:obtain scholarships at foreign
universities and attempts to en-
sure U.S. student attendance at
international student congresses.
The organization, among other

services, also provides files and chapters participated in activi..
background material on issues
of interest to students, he ex-
plained.
? The student organization par-
ticipates in discussion on such
issues as academic freedom and
civil rights, Conoscenti added.
On the Notre Dame campus,
he said, the NSA has helped stu-
dent government organize a non-
credit "college," a nine-part
symposium on the American stu-
dent.
Moderate Tolically
Politically, the NSA is moder-
ate but progressive, according to
the student Official. Con oscenti,
who said he has attended two
NSA national conventions, said
that the extreme left and right
are vocal too.
But the stand the NSA usually
takes is moderate, he noted.
The disclosure this week that
the ,,CIA has given ,money to the
NSA apparently has no direct
bearing on campus chapters, he
said. He said his understanding
of the. funding was that the -CIA
provided money on the national
level.
Thus, individual students or
. _
ties wholly or partly supported
by the CIA only indirectly, Co.,

Learas From Disclosure
The student leader explained
that he first learned of the NSA.:
CIA relationship from the publie
disclosure.
The student, who is a senior,
said student officials haven't
talked With university officials
regarding the disclosure of the
NSA-CIA relationship.. ,
Notre Dame President Rev.;
Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C.,'
is a member of the national ad.,
visory board ? of the NSA. He is
away from the university today';
Conoscenti said that he is una:,
ware of any changes in the
Notre Dame NSA chapter or its
relationship with student govern.;
rnent as a result of the disclo:
sure. He said no changes are
planned, to the best of his knowl:
edge.
The Student Senate rneetin
will be held at 7 p.m. today in
the Student Center. fStudent. ,
President Fish will formally pre. ;
sent a statement on the matter,
then, Conoscenti said.
