Merry-Go-Ronne! cM Wants Antitrust,.Suit By Drew Pearson ? It isn't being advertised, but Lloyd Cutler, the astute auto industry lawyer, dropped in at the Antitrust Division the : - 74other day to I argue Assistant t lAttorney Gen- eral Donald .Turner into 4dropping the civil case against Gener- al Motors for monopoliz- , the loco- motive market. 'Pearson Cutler is the man who has cajoled, pres- sured and persuaded some 'members of the House Com- merce Committee over to the auto industry's side on safety, also represented the big drug companies when the issue of safe drugs was before Con- gress. He has become one of the most versatile big-business at- torneys in Washington. And the fact that he used to belong to the same law firm as anti- trust chief Donald , Turner hasn't hurt him a bit. Turner is the man who re- cently took a trip to St. Louis in the Anheuser Busch private plane to see the All Star base- ball game, shortly after drop- ping an antitrust suit against the big brewing company. When John Doerfer, Pres- ident Eisenhower's chairman of the Federal Comunications Gornmission was a guest on the' Storer yacht while .entrusted with regulating Storer broad- casting stations, Eisenhower demanded his resignation. It will be interesting to. see what hapens in regard to Tur- ner on two counts: First, whether LI3J requests his res- ignation; second, whether Cut- ler persuades Turner to drop the civil case against General Motors. GM has *b e en accused, among other things, of telling railroads it would not ship its autos or other equipm: lit over their lines unless thrn, pur- chased GM locomotive GM was first indieim in a1 criminal case in the Kennedy administration, April 12, 1961. The criminal case was dis- missed in Chicago Dec. 28, 1964. Now GM wants the civil case settled, ton.,, Nasser Has Problems ini-rfcir some Near East fireworks this week in Egypt. President Nasser will celebrate the anniversary of his advent to power on Saturday and, in addition to a big military parade, is expected to launch some of the missiles concocted by the ex-Nazi scientists now working in Cairo. Behind this show of strength is the fact that Nasser is hav- ing a tough time politically and economically and nee?.s some spectacular missile launchings to divert attention from his problems. ,One,of his chief .problems k. rep is the enmity of other Arab leaders, highlighted during the recent visit of King Faisal to Washington when the King of Saudi Arabia laid it on the line to the State Department that he did not relish the big food grants the United States is ex- tending to Nasser. Although King Faisal was snubbed in New York City be- cause of his anti-Israel re- marks, there is one thing he has in common with Israel? opposition to Nasser. This was one of the reasons why the U.S. food agreement with Egypt was not extended when it expired June, 30. Meanwhile, most of the Egyptian infantry is still fight- ing in the Yemen against forces friendly to King Faisal. This is why Nasser will pump up a display of tanks, armored combat vehicles and missile launchings surpassing the one he staged last year. Actually three types of mis- siles have appeared in the past: 1. El-Raed, a two-stage mis- sile, range 440 miles, with a warhead of one ton. , 2. El Kaher, range '75 miles, a warhead of 1,500 pounds. 3. El Zafir, with a warhead of 1,000 pounds and a range of 235 miles. It's also reported the Egyp- tians will parade Russian-made missiles of the SAM-2 variety, together' with sea-to-sea Rus- sian-made Missiles of the on 14 gunboats off the Egyptoi ian coast. Real fact is that all these weapons have been shown be- fore, and the chief significance of the display will be an over- exaggerated show of military' might to calm Egyptian unrest It's reported that the 70,000 troops fighting in the Yemen; are so fed up with Nasser that it would be dangerous to bring: them home. Nasser also faces. problems from his deteriorat- ing economy, now almost on, the verge of bankruptcy. So' the display of Cairo fireworks: this week will attempt to cover, up a lot of hidden weakness.: Texan's Best The wounded veterans whom Secretary McNamara took on the cruise down the Potomac] didn't know it, but the deli- cious Texas barbecue they en- joyed was largely through the courtesy'of Tom Finan, Mary- land candidate for Governor,' and of Big Brothers. Mrs. Es- ther Coppersmith, dynamic sparkplug of the Finan cam- paign, had arranged for the LBJ Ranch barbecuer, Walter Jetton, to come to Washington from Fort Worth to do the Big Brothers ? barbecue on Satur- day evening and the Finan-for- Governor barbecue on Mon- day. Having taken the long trip from Texas, Jetton obliged the Secretary of Defense by donating and cooking the best food Texas can offer for the veterans just returned from' Vietnam.
