You will remember that on December 20, 1963, in
connection with the plans then being formulated for
the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library, I sent a letter
to'each cabinet officer and, to the heads of government
agencies endorsing the program for the collection of
copies of histo:ical materials in government agencies,
and requesting every department or agency to cooperate
fully in this undertaking.
I have been informed that the result of this program
has been to create a collection of historical source
materials that will greatly enhance the usefulness of
the Library to future scholars.
The marked success of this activity, which was carried
out by The National Archives leads me to believe that
it should be established as a permanent activity of that
agency, so that henceforward all Presidential libraries
will have the benefit of this enrichment of their collec-
tions. To that end I wish a continuing program of this
character.
I am certain all agencies of the Federal government will
continue the same fine cooperation that has been given
this endeavor in the past.
