15. Determined that Mr. Tom McEvoy, pre:_ ently
on the staff of Senator Jose h T din s was the individual who had initiated
the letter to the Director I also learned that tFie 25X1
Senator was not aware of the constituent inquiry that prompted Mr. McE uy
to write the letter. After very light discussion with Mr. McEvoy, it wa,
determined that a meeting with Senator Tydings on this would not be nec' ssary.
However, Mr. McEvoy was assured that should the Senator become interested
in this, we would be glad to go over the matter with him personally.
16. I I Senator Leverett Saltonstall called to advise t .at
he and Senator Russell were going to make floor statements today on the
current resolution before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Sen:tor
Saltonstall wished me to drop by his office to go over a few points. This I
did. He merely wanted to review certain points that he planned to make
during his short speech. I saw no problem with any of the points altIou?.'1
his actual floor statement covered many other topics.
17. At the request of the Director, there was ?eft with
Mr. Darden, Senate Armed Services Committee staff, a copy of the Age-l'-Y's
internal analysis of the New York Times series. I explained to Mr. Darden
the background and that his responsibility was solely to be custodian bec..ase
of special classification of certain parts.
18. What apparently had been planned as very sho,'t
remarks by Senator,, ii-sell and Saltonstall on the floor turned into a fud-
fledged two-hour debate. Speaking against the resolution in Senate F'ore.gn
Relations were Senators Russell, Stennis, Saltonstall, Symington, Milto-i
Young, Lausche, and Holland, briefly. Those answering were Fulbrigh? ~Lnd
McCarthy.
