NEW YORK 11432 Congrezz of the ?niteb &tato Nowe of Reprezentatibez Dear Colleague: 4.5bington, O.C. January 23, 1969 SUBCOMMITTEES: INTERNATIONAL FINANCE INTERNATIONAL TRADE CONSUMER AFFAIRS VETERANS' AFFAIRS COMMITTEE SUBCOMMITTEES: HOSPITALS EDUCATION AND TRAINING HOUSING I know you will be interested to learn that forty-three of our colleagues (list attached) have agreed to join in sponsoring legislation to establish a Department of Peace and a Joint Committee on Peace in Congress. We are planning to formally introduce the bill on February 6. If you wish to join in co-sponsoring this bill, but have not yet informed me, I would appreciate your letting me know not later than 12:00 noon on February 5. Please notify John Mathews of my staff -- extension 2536. Prior to the introduction of the bill, we are planning a conference of the sponsors to date -- both Senate and House -- to revise the legislation (copy of earlier bill enclosed). and to coordinate our plans. The conference is scheduled for January 29, at 2:30 p.m. in Room H202 of the Capitol. If you wish to attend this or to be informed of any proposed revision, kindly call Mr. Mathews. Public support for a Department of Peace and a Joint Committee on Peace in the Congress is very encouraging. Favorable articles have been published in more than twenty national publications and many Congressmen have received volumes of mail urging this action. I think it is significant that President Nixon pledged "to consecrate my office, my energies, and all the wisdom I can summon, to the cause of peace among nations. " This legislation can help to implement that pledge. I want you to know how much we would welcome your association with us on this monumental legislation.
