Approved,Eor Release 2002/06/14: CIA-RDP71 Bi9185A000100020122-6 30 July 1966 MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director for Science and Technology Regarding the proposed ORD work with speech recognition for machine control, the note on page 38 of the March Transactions that who is one of the proposed investigators, wrote on "Automatic Speech Recognition Procedures" in 1961 that the proposal is to have operating prototype hardware in 3 years. If you wish to scan the bibliographies, you will note that the woods are full of ideas and studies in speech. In the second attached paper, reference No. 36, is "Automatic Recognition of Phonetic Patterns in Speech". The real problem is that the variations are so great that any universal sort of recognizer or analyzer tends to get lost in this large uncertainty number. 25X1A scr5aii,. r, Approved For Release 2002/06/14: CIA-RDP71 B001 5Ab.s10(122-6
