SUBJECT: Briefing of the DCI on the Economy of the Dominican
Republic
1. On 12 January the undersigned briefed the DCI on the
Dominican economy. This briefing covered the following points:
a) the predominance of agriculture in the economy, b) the limited
mining and industrial activity in the country, c) the adequacy of
transportation and communications, d) the performance of the
economy since 1951, e) current economic problems, f) and prospects
for the future. Graphics showing the topography of the Dominican
Republic, gross national product (GNP) and per capita GNP since
1950, and a basic data board were used in the presentation.
2. The questions raised by the Director following the briefing
were primarily concerned with the future level and administration
