During` 1966
1. En respse to your request, the items described
below rep:cesent several of the significant intelligence
support activities wccoaplished by the office of Research
and Reports ({) during 1966.
2. ]Following significant support to the state
Department in :1965, ORR ntinued to provide reporting
in 1966 on the Rhodesia-Z*gbia crisis and particularly
on the ef!ects of the saact'Ipns program against Rhodesia.
Similar support was given to ?the State Department on
the quest:on of the feasibility of economic sanctions
against South Africa.
3. 'cononic intelligence reptTting by ORR on
Indonesia's foreign debt problems efa.bled policy level
officials to keep abreast of Soviet attitudes towards
Indonesia's sizeable debt to the USSR,. Also provided
was a report on the prospects for conti ed Soviet
military stsssisstance to Indonesia. Other *studies provided
vital background material-on Indonesia's general economic
capabilities that was of significant use to'- the US par-
ticipants in Indonesia's negotiations with its western
4. Military-economic, research and reportin by ORR
on military developments in the USSR and Ccuniss'k China
supported policy and planning officials in the Departments
of State and Defense on such strategically significitat
issues as the possible effect on the US military posture
of recent developments in Soviet ICBM, Soviet anti-bs.lisstic
missiles, Chinese ballistic missiles and other major w -pons
systems.

5. The pier ;vision by O.RR ` t speci i policy support
specific issues was also illustrated by a detailed
exasainsttion of the threat and capabilities currently
posed by the ground forces of the USSR and Warsaw Pact
c.,untries., Thus, Intelligence background was pro-
vided for a detailed intergovernmental study of future
NATO f-.rce* structures and military capabilities.
