Approved For Release 2006/11/20: CIA-RDP7O-00211 R000500170027-8 11 February 1966 Remarks of Mr. Sternman, National Archives In Regard to Success of President's Moratorium On Purchase of Filing Cabinets He does not expect that the moratorium will be lifted this year. He does not anticipate".that it will be extended to include other types of filing equipment To document success of the moratorium: There was *$t,000,000 less spent in 1965 for file cabinets than in 1964 In 1965 GSA approved the purchase of 13,000 file cabinets for the entire Federal Government. The majority, approximately 84% of these, were for newly created organizations: (Poverty Program 5,000 - HEW, Social Security Medicare Program 5,000 - and about 1,000 for NASA and its contractors). As to our agency's participation he said he doesn't know of any requests received -from CIA for correspondence cabinets. He indicated that President Johnson was favorably impressed with the overall success of his moratorium The following was extracted from a report made by President Johnson to the Cabinet - subject: Reviewing Cost Reduction Program by Civilian Agencies: "We can all make do with a little bit less if we try The moratorium on purchase of file cabinets has hurt no one". The reference to above is contained in the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents, Volume 1, number 8, page 263, dated Monday, 20 September 1965.
