A preliminary study of the mission photography shows that
29 targets were covered by this mission, including 4 airfields,
21 military installations, 1 electronics facility, and 3 urban
areas. Twenty of these targets were on the COMOR listing (see
table 2).
Analysis of mission photography has revealed a SAM site (see
figure 2), located approximately 12 nautical miles southwest of
K'un-ming. It does not appear, however, that this site launched
a missile against the U-2.
The photography indicates that the missiles fired at the U-2
probably were Guideline-type missiles (see figure 3). Although
the missiles cannot be identified positively, analysis suggests
that they are either the original Guidelines furnished to the Chinese
or native Chinese SAMs closely copied, at least in their external
configuration, from the Guideline missile.
