Approved For Release 2006/09/27: CIA-RDP67-008968.0001001 ff 6 15 January 1962 MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Document Division Chief, Machine Division SUBJECT : Appreciation for Technical Support to ISC Publication With the revised edition published in 1960, the Intelligence Subject, Code became a USIB sponsored publication for the use of the intelligence community. This latest revision prepared for release in January 1962, represents still another step in our deliberate effort to maintain a dynamic documentation program. We have in fact combined two distinct advances: substantive-improvements have been made through the inclusion of supplements agreed upon by the CODIB Subcommittee on Classification, and the entire subject and area code has been placed on punched cards. As a result, we are now in a position to benefit from machine support in future maintenance and reissue of the entire ISC at moderate cost. It has been a matter of particular pleasure for me to observe the quality of workmanship shown in the preparation of the entire project. That work reflects not only skill, but genuine pride in accomplishment. It merits the appreciation of this Office and the community which we serve. I have asked that a copy of this letter be placed in the personnel folder of these members of our staff who prepared the cards and typescript in so excellent a manner: The capital investment made by OCR is calculated to demonstrate the advantages of machine support joined with the. substantive effort required to maintain a current indexing system. Our decision to. prepare the 1962 and subsequent editions from punched cards has been justified by the symmetry and elegance of the text recently submitted to the printers.
