Re: Material Submitted for Review by Q.I.G. 1. The two looseleaf notebooks received from dir. Sagsndorph in response to the request of the C.I,G. have been examined by the Central Planning Staff. These books contain newspaper and magazine clippings and some tabulated data concerning t reraft of the kited States and of a number of foreign countries. to The source of much of the information on foreign aircraft is not shout but it is know that this data is in the possession of the Navy and the Army Air Forces and my have been obtained from these sources in the course of ', $asendorph's official duties with censorship activities. $. A,nual 45.59.1 contains lists of classified material in the Army Air Forces and also indicates the releasable technical information on each item of equipment mentioned therein. A spot check of the information eon- tained in Mr. $agendorph'e record against the AA? Manual disoloses that the Approved For Release 2001/03/02 : CIA-RDP64-00658A000100100007-0 Approved For Release 2001/03/02 : CIA-RDP64-00458A000100100007-0 information is of an unclassified nature and had been officially released for publication, 4. The Army Air Forces established the AAF Committee on the Release of Technical Information in October 1943 for the purpose of controlling the release for publication of data on United States aircraft. As collab- orating members, this committee had representatives from non-AU agencies such as Joint Security Control, the War Department Bureau of Public Relations, the Office of Censorship, the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, the Office of War Information and the Royal Air Force. Soon after its activation, this committee etfectiTely controlled the release of information on U.S. aircraft and related equipment and succeeded in eliminating almost entirely the unofficial releases mentioned by Mr. Sagendorph, which were frequent occurrences in the early stages of the war. 5. A, review of these records and consideration of the other factors mentioned herein leads to the conclusion that the material submitted by Mr, Sagendorph can serve no useful purpose in connection with the 0.1.0. study of censorship matters and that it should be returned to him. d. Action recomiendeds that the attached draft letter to Mr Sagendorph be approved and di spatchad. 25X1A9a RE,ap a Acting Chief, Central Planning Staff Approved For Release 2001/03/02 : CIA-RDP64-00658A000100100007-0
