SUBJECT: D/GL Activity Report for the Month of March 1960
A second briefing was trade by the Coordinator for Nap?~ at the
Administrative Operations Course, at the Department of State Foreign
Service Institute. Both the Geographic Attache program and the map
services available to Foref.gn Service posts were reviewed0
4,, Two trips were made to Vit. Records, A total of 1X000 mans
and 134 publications were forwarded to this center in March.,
5. Automatic distribution has been set up to supply the CI!*CPAC
War Room with CIA-publishes? maps on its areas of responsibility?
6. Of the 3,722 map sheets which were obtained from foreign
sources during the month, 1r3% were received on exchange, 12% 'were
received as gi.ftsr, and 45% were purchased, Significant items included:
a 1958 "Nap of Hungary: Counties?" at 1:250,000, published by Kartografiai
Vallalat, Budapest; a 1960 railroad atlas of the USSR; a 1959 economic,
geography of the Soviet Zone of East Germany; and "Afrique a Carte
Politique, Situation au ler Zanier 1960," l:10,000,000,, This is the
most up-to-date political reap of Africa available,
7o A report on the FY-1960 Central Fund for post expenditures
through December 1959 was prepared and distribir'ed to the participating
agencies'
Bo Planning and Development
1, A paper has been drafted on the uses of topographic maps by
selected occupational categories for use by field collectors. This
paper will assist collectors in broadening the target base for the
required maps from map producers to include significant map users,,

preparing Agency personnel planning to attend the IGU meetings in

1. The Near East Desk Officer briefed the newly-appointed
Assistant Army Attache for Iraq in connection with mapping activities
which have taken place in Iraq since began his tour of duty

Mr0 Mack, Deputy Chief of the Map Evaluation Division at AMS,
attended this meeting to explain his activities in Germany during

project supporting efforts to collect topographic maps of the Sino.
Soviet Bloc was assured by Colonel Diercks.

of targets within the Bloc, Colonel Dalton, Chief of 3T, wrongly
recommended visits to ACIG and SAC, as well as briefings in AFCIPI,
on matters relating to the Special Project,
