Special Afghanistan Requirements
1. if feasible, visual observatien of certain Afghanistan targets is
requested if they can be observed in the course of a special Project
operation which X underetand is imminent and is being mounted for other
purposes.
2. !he targets, together with general background information, include:
Miser.i.Sherif (36.4oN 67-0134 where we have reports that a large airfield
is being constructed under Soviet aid, and where 25 to 100 crated or .
aeeied MIO's are said bo be stationed; and airfields at Kabul
69-100, Herat (34-10 62,1%R), Farah (approximately 32-40N
O.. 20E), Kandahar (31.37N 65.45E)7As-aksni (33.32/1 68.26E), about which
we have little information. -
3. We are also anxious to learn of any major improvements work underway
along road systems leading south into Afghanistan from the Soviet border.
Some of these road systems of interest are the one from Kluft* (35-16M
62.20E) to Cbehil Dukbtaran (35-0811 62.173)100tnnunannsXRAtt to Herat;
the one from Ke1if (approximately 37.20N 66-40E) to Dagla Arasa (37.19N
6646E) to Mesar-i-Sharift and the road system from Nesar.i.Sharif
as it winds- southward to Kabul.
4. It is repeated that this request is not intended to affect or
divert the operation being planned, but it is submitted in the event
that some of these targets will cone under observation during the operation.
