Declassified in Part- Sanitized Copy Approved forRelease2013/08/28 : CIA-RDP61500750A000500040174-9 UhL.ji) Nle 30 January 1958 TCS 2557/58 Copy of a MEMORANDUM FOR: Chairman, Ad Hoc Requirements Committee for Project AqUATONE SUBJECT ? EXamination of Available AQUATONE Coverage for Possible ICBM Launching Sites 1. As a result of detailed examination of August 1957 AQUATONE coverage of the area designated second priority in CIA/RR RA-25, the following suspect installations were discovered: (a) A rail spur, for which no economic justification is apparent, was under construction in the area northeast of Novosibirsk. This spur, when completed, will leave the mainline of the Trans7Sfberian Railroad at a point east of Mbshkovo (55 16 N - 83 31 E) and will run northward approximately 25 kilometers to terminate near the OB River. Although the spur was in an early construction stage at the time of the photography, earth scars clearly indicate that the terminus will be a loop. Careful comparison of this loop with those revealed at Tyura Tam and Kapustin Yar is now underway. The only buildings in the vicinity of the terminus appear to be VIP type houses situated along a rural road to the east. (b) A second suspicious installation was located in the Semipalatinsk Area. In this case a completed spur leads southward from a newly-constructed mainline which closely parallels the Irtish River. The spur, which has no apparent economic justification, is 3/4 of a mile long, loops, and terminates as two stub-end tracks. Unusual towers are located both near the spur and in a wooded area SOM2 distance removed. Comparison of the configuration revealed here is being made with those revealed at Tyura Tam and Kapustin Yar. 2. Upon completion, photographic interpretations of these two areas will be distributed to all TALENT recipients.
