"Books to Span the East and West"
CHARLES E. TUTTLE COMPANY
Publishers and Booksellers
RUTLAND, VERMONT
You'd be surprised at the success of such off-beat titles as THE
JAPANESE ABACUS, the poor man's IBM; ZEN FLESH, ZEN
BONES, a collection of actual Zen writings; and THE GAME OF
GO, the Orient's challenge to checkers.
Public response to MODERN JAPANESE PRINTS proved that
the American art-lover can appreciate this avant-garde art form, even
though it lacks the expected in "Oriental" art.
The inexpensive, lavishly illustrated LIBRARY OF JAPANESE
ART has more than fulfilled expectations on the American book
market, and we were delighted at the enthusiastic response to the
volume on Sesshu, whose main works were in the black and white
ink-painting tradition, rather than the more colorful genre school.
An interesting incident concerning one of our forthcoming publi-
cations, THE HOKUSAI SKETCHBOOKS, took place when the
plane in which the author, James Michener, carrying the manuscript
with him, was forced to ditch in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Fortunately, Michener succeeded in reconstructing his text from
notes and from his prodigious memory.
We are pleased to report that reprints of several Oriental classics,
including THE BOOK OF TEA and Lafcadio Hearn's JAPAN: AN
INTERPRETATION have done well. Send us your own suggestions
for outstanding out-of-print titles to revive.
Everyone knows there are many worthy manuscripts of a schol-
arly nature, which, although deserving of publication, cannot be
published as a commercial venture. A section in our Tokyo office is
devoted to publishing such books, particularly those subvented by a
foundation or scholarly organization, at prices well below what you
might expect. Examples of titles published under this arrangement
are CULTURAL FREEDOM IN ASIA, sponsored by the Congress
for Cultural Freedom, and JAPANESE STUDIES OF MODERN
CHINA by Fairbank and Banno, sponsored by the Harvard-Yenching
Institute.
