Hiss Blocked Korean
Revolt, Ex-Envoy Says
By the Associated Press.
WARWICK, R. I., Aug. 31.-
James H. R. Cromwell, former
ambassador to Canada, said today
that "a blueprint for revolution in'
Korea" to break the Japanese
"'stranglehold" on that country
during World War II was blocked
by Communist influences in the
State Department.
He told a Republican outing
here that Alger Hiss prevented the
plan from reaching Cordell Hull,
then Secretary of State.
Mr. Cromwell, who , changed his
political affiliation from Demo-
cratic to Republican becayse of
Communist influences in govern-
ment, added:
"The situation is as. bad now rs
it was then."
Adviser to Syngman Rhee from
1941 to 1944, Mr; Cromwell said
Gen. William (Wild Bill) Dono-
van, head of the OSS, approved
the - Korean revolt plans and
needed only State Department
recognition of the Republic of
Korea.
