Sometime ago Lieut. Thrun stated that you had requested
this office to obtain what information might be available in
the files of FBI, ONI and MIS to supplement the material in
the attached file representing inquiries apparently made in
1942.
The files of all three agencies contain fairly full
reports indicating that the Subject is the author of "Agent
In Italy" and has written articles for Life Magazine and
Mecllanix Illustrated. The facts relateriiithe book "Agent
In Italy are said to have been checked and found to be
accurate.
Subject is said to have been born in Poland 15 October
1901 and is described variously as a citizen of Austria and
Germany. He is scid to have left Vienna in July of 1939 to
go to Italy where he furnished information to the U.S. Naval
Attache in Rome. It is further reported that American
Embassy officials aided him in leaving Italy and that he
arrived in the United States 25 August 1941. Subject is
indicated to have furnished information to ONI on several
occasions but this information is indicated not to have been
of much value or importance. Subject's uncles Carl Hauptman,
was reported to be a General in the Imperial Austrian Army
and Chief of Staff in ths Austrian Army during World War I.
His father was connected with the Austrian War Ministey in
charge of the Italian Intelligence Section.
The testimony of confidential informants indicates that
the Subject is anti-Nazi but craves excitment and is much
taken with the romantic idea of being a spy. He wants to
show that he is smarter than any one else and is said to be
cultured and intslligent.

In Tice of the critioal need for personnel due to
the rapidly increasing work load in this kininistratlen and
the diffioulty emountered in scouring qualified trained em-
ployees through the usual employment and recruitment sources,
request is hereby made for the release of Corporal Blythe Am
Hatter in order that he may be assigned to a position in the
FiAAA04 Urvice, Central Office of the Veterans Administra-
tion,
The vacancy to which it is desired to ailsign him is
in connection with auditing vouchers under insurance collec-
tions tod balancing these items with the Treasury Departmamt�
There will be lb. constant increase in this class of work due
to the upward trend of insurance awards received for payment
and it is expected that the peak will not be reachtd for a
conaiderable time. /t is anticipated that the volume of this
work will far more than double the present load by the end af
the current ft/cal year.
For the last eight years prior to his induction into
the Army, May 17, 1943, Corporal Hatter was employed by the
Oovernmont in an auditing capacity. It practically is impos-
sible to secure the services of qualified personnel for this
type of work and, in view of the fact that this serviceman
has but one eye and was inducted into the Army for limited
servioe only, it is felt that he would be of more value to
the mwernment in the employ of this Administration.

admirably. For that reason he doubted that he would have bean active on
behalf of Communism while at Columbus, even though he might have been so
minded before he arrived, which he doubted. its also pointed out that HARRIS
had lad little or nothing to do with either Faculty members or students *he
were thought to have Coutunistio tendencies.
Professor MUNE described BARRIS as a Liberal in the
sense that he was a believer in a liberal interpretation of bmoadoned posers
for the federal goverment, but that as such Liberal he was opposed to Oemo
=mini as being contrary to a demooracy.
Professor MUNE further advired that BARRIO had
originally be3n employed by the Office of Strategio Services in a oonfidential
capacity to obtain information in West Africa, with which he WSJ completely
familiar throagh his travels. He had spent uaveral months in Africa during
the latter part of 1942, returning to this country early in 1943. Thereafter
he became ill with malaria and had reoovered only recently. A short time ago
he had written Professor DENUNE that ha was trying to got into the Army but
that bockause of the malaria the army hesitated to take him at this time.
Early in ...ug'ist Professor DENUNE had reooived another letter from BARRIS advising
that hb was then fully recovered and had been truneferred to the State Department
indicating that ho was leaving for South Africa by 91ame about the middle of
A4gust, to work as an attache of the State Department in South Africa.
FARRIS had advised Professor Dq1UNE that he intended to work for the government
for the duration at lea, and Professor TERM doubted that he would return
t; the University.
