ae recently had occasion to request the
services of thc survey of Foreign Experts in connection
with an urgent ap:;eal telephoned from Washington. In
comp1etin6. a highly important railroad map of Manchuria,
the Far Eastern Enemy Division found that it needed
more detail on and definite confirmation of certain
information that had been obtained earlier relative to
the above-named railroad.
In spite of the difficulties connectiftd with
contacting the one source who had the facts, your
office was able to give us the complete information the
followint, day and consequently our Washington analysts
had their smszers within 24 hours.
?Je would like to take particular notice of
this example of cooperation on the part of the Survey
and to thank yrdi and Mr. Cornell for expediting this
matter with such speed and efficiency.

able to obtain any further information for us, either
on the general machinery angle or an the various
sections of the industry. If S.F.B. consider that
they have completed their work, I should like to write
and tell London, and ask them whether there ars any
poilts on which they want further information.
May I, however, at this stage,
tell you what an extremely good job I think your office
and the s.F,L1;. have together made of this ingLuiry. The
reports which they have sent have been of an extremely
high standard, and will have provided London with a
great deal of useful information which was not previous.

With reference to your memorandum of Soptember 28,
this will acknowledge receipt of all SFE reports listed
therein and will inform you that these have all been trans?
mitted to the ori6inal source of the request.
We would like to take this opportunity to express
to the SFE our appreciation of the efficient and expeditious
manner in which this project was handled. Not only have the
reports come througn quickly and with regularity but we are
told by the interested parties that the informaton contained
therein has been unobtainable elsewhere and therefore has been
indispensable to the completion of the survey of the German,
Austrian and Czechoslovakian clothing industries4
A special word of praise should go to Dr. Pitt who
has cari.ied the burden of the work steadily over a period of
many weeks and who has been so thoroughly and exhaustive in
his treatment of the subject. We are told that The quality
of the finished product has been most impressive to the
experts who are compiling the final report.
Insofar as the PEA is concerned, this project may
now be considered as closed. Further comments from the
source of the inquiry will be passed on to you upon receipt
here. It is hoped that no further work will have to be don*
by the SPE, but we appreciate your offer to folloo up on any
gaps which may develop from further analysis of the report*.
