MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: NSA Files
NSA requested that I contact
(CIA Security employee stationed at NSA) in regard to the
destruction of 800 cubic feet of records (cards, documents, etc.,
all folded to 3 x 5 size). indicated that as far as
NSA is concerned there is no further need for retaining these
records and she wanted to destroy them if we (CIA), especially
had no further need for them.
14 May 1970 SI-AT
After considerable difficulty I was able to locate
who in turn put me in touch with her superior,
of the Office of Security, informed
me that he feels that CIA is not the only Agency that has an
interest in and a need for reference to these files. He there-
fore, would be very reluctant to advocate in the event NSA
relinquished custody over these files, that we (CIA) place these
in our Records Center.

After several discussions with all involved I have been
advised by Records Officer for NSA, that they are in SI-AT
the process of transferring the 800 cubic feet of these records
to their Records Center for one year, after which time they will
then review the activity over the past year to determine dispo-
sition action.
was unable to inform me how long these Special
Clearance (SI) files must be retained. However, as they are
a static file, that is nothing will be added to the individual
cases, I then asked him if he felt that this file would be a
good candidate for microfilming. He was not too.:%impr:6azSedawith
microfilm, but at the same time didn't rule it out as a consid-
eration.
It was finally agreed that no further action as to dispo-
sition, other than the transfer to the NSA Records Center, would
be taken until a review of the reference activity is made one
year from this date.
