shown in the copy of "Tenth Anniversary - Cuban Missile Crisis
Commemorative Display" which we left with you in March.- We need
specific information, however, as to When and where the panels
should be delivered.

All of us enjoyed and appreciated your visit here the other
day. We are unanimous in our enthusiasm for the exhibit and
certainly want it. I have talked with Brad Washburn at the
Museum of Science about displaying it there; if his plans for
the summer and fall are firm, we'll try somewhere else.
I understand that you will ship the material, so long as we
give you three weeks advance notice as to when and where.

Dear Mr. Collins:
Thank you for your letter of 20 January 1976 concerning the 1972
exhibit on the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. I agree that artifacts from
that exhibit should be available for public viewing. I have authorized
the Director of the National Photographic Interpretation Center (NPI0) to
transfer custody of the requested items from the CIA to the National Air n
and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
Concerning the request for an obsolete U-2 aircraft, the CIA has
transferred their U-2's to the USAF Strategic Air Command. Suggest you
contact the office of the Secretary of the Air Force regarding the avail-
ability of a surplus U-2 aircraft.
I also thank you for your suggestions on the disposition of the thirty-
one Cuban missile crisis exhibit panels, and elicit your assistance in
contacting the various museums, schools, or academies that may have an
interest in owning the display. The Director, NPIC, Mr. John Hicks, will,
work with You in selecting a candidate and providing the transfer of thosi
panels to a permanent home.

Thank you for your letter of 18 February' transferring
to the Smithsonian Institution title of the artifacts in
the 1972 CIA "Cuban Missile Crisis" exhibit. We are indeed
pleased to add this material to the National Collection.
We shall arrange a physical transfer of these items to our
Silver Hill facility in the next few months in coordination
with Mr. John Hicks, NPIC.
We understand that the Agency has turned over all
Agency U-2's to the USAF Strategic Air Command. We shall
inquire of the Secretary of the Air Force the possible
availability of a surplus U-2 aircraft for our collection
ntual exhibit in the Museum.
Concerning the disposition of the thirty-one exhibit
panels we shall be pleased to assist in a search for an
appropriate recipient. Because of the strong role of Presi-
dent Kennedy in this story we have approached first the John
F. Kennedy Memorial Library. Our Assistant Director, Fred
urant, discussed the matter with the Director of the Lib
D Daniel Fenn on 25 February.
He was immediately interested. Both he and the Library
Curator, David Powers, would welcome a discussion with or
visit by a representative of NPIC. Dr. Fenn may ,be reached

We are most grateful to the CIA in making possible the
further preservation and exhibit of the U-2 operational

Last week we were privileged to see photographs of the 1972 Central '
Intelligence Agency exhibit on the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. Authoriza-
tion to show us these photographs was given to of STAT
,NPIC, by your Mr. Carl Duckett, ?DDIS&T.
It is. our understanding that this exhibit has been in storage since
1972 and that it might be available for accession. We believe that
elements of this exhibit are indeed important to preserve.

Our situation at the National Air and Space Museum at this time
that all exhibit areas in our new building are under construction on
tight schedule for our scheduled opening on 4 July.
Although we shall have 65 aircraft on exhibit it is our intention
to rotate some of these each joear.' One aircraft we should like to add
to the National Collection is a Lockheed U-2. If there is a possibility ,
that title to an obsolete model of a U-2 aircraftght be transferred '
to the Smithsonian Institution we are most interested in acquiring such
an aircraft. '
If such were feasible we should then like very much to .acquire from
the Central Intelligence Agency the artifacts in the 1972 exhibit together
with duplicate negatives of photographs used. These artifacts 'include '
the historic U-2 camera, pilot suits, ejection seat, survival gear,
phOto interpretation equipment, etc:

With.regard to the thirty-some exhibit panels used in 010'1972
exhibit,: we would prefer to develop our own exhibit concentrating more
upon the significant advancements in'tpchnology rather than'pritharilY'
the politico-military aspects.
Nevertheless, we recognize the very great skill.and effort that
produced the factual, chronological and truly exciting story' displayed
in the 1912 exhibit ; :If it has not already been done we would suggest
bringing ihp existence Of these exhibit panels to the attention of the F.
Kennedy Memorial Library CBostony as well as the National War
the'Army, Navy and Air Force service academies, the service'
post-graduate schools, as well as to major U.S. museums such as the -
Museum of Science (Boston), Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago),,
tc,
May we hear from you at your early convenience as to the possibility
of obtaining. a U-2 aircraft and the artifacts displayed in the 1972 CIA
exhibit? Full credit of source of such artifacts would be given while
on exhibit.
