KISSINGER MAY HAVE COMMITTED PERJURY ABOUT CHILEAN SITUATION
ANNOUNCER: Well, with a little more information on
what we've been doing in Chile, the Central Intelligence Agency
under the personal direction of Dr. Henry Kissinger channeled
between eight million and twelve million dollars into Chile
between 1970 and the death of Salvador Allende three years
later.
The secret CIA activity was spelled out during closed
door hearings in Congress last April 22nd by the Agency's
Director, William Colby. A Congressional letter summarizing
Colby's testimony was leaked to both the New York Times and the
Washington Post. The newspapers report that all secret CIA
appropriations were authorized by the Forty Committee, a high-
level intelligence review committee then chaired by Kissinger.
According to Colby's testimony, the money was used
in Chile to support Allende opponents, to purchase radio stations
and newspapers to attack Allende, and even to bribe Chilean
senators to vote against the Allende government. Colby's testi-
mony indicates that Kissinger may have committed perjury when he
testified on the Chilean situation before the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee last fall, shortly after Allende was killed.
Kissinger stated at that time the CIA had nothing to
do with the coup to the best of my knowledge and belief. However,
according to Colby, the CIA at the time of the coup was in the
process of channeling a new appropriation of one million dollars
which had been authorized by Kissinger's Forty Committee about
one month before Allende's death.
Congressman Michael Harrington, Democratic liberal
and long-time CIA critic, called for public hearings in Congress
on the CIA's role in Chilean politics. Said Harrington, Kissinger
and Colby should testify, but he added Congress is hesitating be-
cause of fear they'll run into Kissinger.
