OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES
INTEROFFICE MEMO
Mr. John C. Hughes
FROM: Frederic R. Dolbeare
SUBJECT:
'102w. "VI W....meow A,
SE C R F
DATE: ay 16, 1944
Mrs. G. asked me to see her on an urgent matter yesterday
evening. It appears that she has received a telegram from Stock-
holm which conveyed to her the information that her husbanils brother,
Anthony Jean G., whom she states was a leader of the Dutch under-
ground in Southern Holland, has escaped to Stockholm. He was con-
demned as a hostage, but received advance warhing and with the
assistance of cOuntryfolk effected his escape.
As a conspicuous underground leader he is, however, not in
'safety even in Stockholm. It is therefore urgent from the point
of view of his personal safety as well as for the sake of the
recent information that he carries, that he be brought out of
Stockholm as promptly as, possible.
Mrs. G. immediately conferred with the Shell Comparig, of
which he is an official, who in turn addressed themselves to -
Loudon, the Dutch Ambassador in Washington on Saturday, and he
in turn put in a request to the Department of State for the necessary
visa, which is now in the hands of Travers, Chief of the Visa
1 Department. The question of identification, urgency, etc. would
indicate that it is desirable to emphasize the .importance and
interest in this matter to the officials in Washington, so that time
will not be wasted. Mrs. G. was not, however, free to state that
he is the brother of a well-known OSS officer, nor does the Shell
Company, nor does the Dutch Ambassador, know that.
My suggestion is that the situation be brought to the attention
of the appropriate individual in OSS, so that he may supply this
additional information and urge: 1) that telegrams sent to Stockholm
in this connection be sent in a reliable cipher; 2) that attention
be given as to whether he should proceed by Swedish ship (that is the
present plan) or whether it would not be better for him to go by
plane even if that entails interrupting his trip to the United States
for some period.
I feel confident that the General himself, if he were here,
would wish this matter followed energetically in view Of his interest
in the family.
