The chart made by the Institutes Geoaraphicos rilitores of Uruguay and
Aroentina concerning the river Uruguay, which was nublished in 1949, marks portions
of Urugueyan and Argentine territories including the river. This chart was made by
aenon'notoara-etric means and originally at a scale of 1:30,000 and covered an area
from Rio Cutrein to 10 Tnilometers south of the mouth of Arroyo Chapicuy Chico.
Other In)ntions of both territories and Rio Uruguay over Paysandu and Rio negro are
registered in air p,:otogranhical stereoscopic pairs to scales 1:20,000 and 1:33,000
respectively. Those were obtained by our Military Air Force in 1959 and 1960. As
far as the hydrograntical cartography is concerned, the section there the Rio
Urranny is registered is over two and one.helf centuries old. The first napcien on
the Rio lTru,n9y containing sounding srd location of islands was nedo by Dbnuol
Ibarles in 1692. Detneen /910 ond 1940, five editions of charts for navigation of
the Araentine Renublic were nublished in which modifications are registered 411*

Rio Uruguay started playing its part as a frontier boundary on 13 January
17500 the date on uhich the Treaty of Madrid was signed. The starting point of the
fluvial frontier vith Brazil comes from the treaty of limits dated 12 Weather 18519
The limits between Argentina and Brazil were adjusted in the treaty signed in Parana

Assembly of 4 October 1910 again established the middle 'dividing line over
the same river between the outlet of the Cumin River and the $W point of the

Complementary Assembly of 27 December 19270 approved by the Argentine Con.
gross in September 1940, determined that the dividing. line wouldpass by the middle
of the channel of the River Uruguay
The Boundary Treaty of the River Uruguay, uhich took place 26 September 1916
-(knouft-as Brum4breno), Uhidhues..not ratified by either of the.. stated
:that the boundury line between the mouth of the Guareim River and the estuary of the
River de la Plata would continue to be the rtaluee with the islands to the east
belonging to Uruguay and .those to the uest0.belonging to Argentina.
The incidents concerning the occupation of the islands of River Uruguay,
which took place after 1916 and until 19370 led to the recording of proceedings in
s Aires on 3 January.19384 then the !status clue .of 1 Janunry.1936in.the islands'
