BENNO C. SCHMIDT, JR., professor of law, Colunibia.University. Born, Washington, D.C. Education:
B.A., Yale, 1963 and LL.13., Yale, 1966. Clerk to ChicfJustice Earl Warren, 1966-67; Special Assistant, Office
of Legal Counsel; Department ofJustice, 1967-69. Joined Columbia Law School faculty, 1969. He has written
various articles in law and journalism reviews on questions of press freedom, and his book Freedom of the Press
vs. Public Access was published in 1976. At present, Professor Schmidt is at work on a volume of the Holmes
Devise History of the Supreme Court of the United States. He has been a discussion,leadcr in previous media
and the law conferences.
ALAN M. DERSHOWITZ, professor of law, Harvard University. Born, Brooklyn, N.Y. Education: B.A.,
Brooklyn College, 1969 and LL.B., Yale, 1962. Clerk to Chief Judge David Bazclon, 1962-63; .Clerk to
Mr. Justice Arthur J. Goldberg, 1963-64. Joined Harvard Law School faculty, 1964. He has co-authored two
books on criminal law and psychoanalysis, psychiatry and the law. Professor Dershowitz was a contributor to
Courts of Terror by Telford Taylor. He was a discussion leader in a pilot conference on human rights.
THOMAS M. FRANCK, professor of law, New York University. Born, Berlin, Germany. Education: B.A.,
University of British Columbia, 1952 and LL.B., University of British Columbia, 1953. LL.M., Harvard, 1954
and S.J.D., Harvard, 1959. Joined New York University Law School faculty, 196o; Director of the University's
Center for International Studies, 1965 to date. He has served as Director of the Carnegie Endowment's Inter-
national Law Program for the past five years. Professor Franck has written extensively in the field of law and
public/foreign policy. He was awarded the Christopher Medal in 1976 for his book Resignation and Protest.
SOLI J. SORABJEE, Additional Solicitor-General of India, appeared in cases dealing with freedom of the
press and pre-censorship during the Emergency. He is author of The Law of Press Censorship in India published.
