The locational map (opposite) delineates the area covered by this gazetteer. The names in this gazetteer supersede those in all previous Board lists for the area concerned. The entries in this gazetteer incluue standard names approved by the Board on Geographic Names and unap- proved variant names, the latter cross-referenced to the standard names, Users of the gazetteer should always refer to main entries for approved names, - Entries include the names of first-order administrative divisions, populated places of various sizes, other cultural entities, and a diversity of topographic and hydrographic features. Undersea features which lie wholly or partly outside territorial waters are also included in this gaZetteer. The names of such features are spelled in the form approved by the U,S. Board on Geographic Names' (BGN) and the Secretary of the Interior on the recommendation of the BGN Advisory Committee on Undersea Features. The basic name coverage corresponds to that of maps at the scale of 1:100,000; however, for some areas the names density is based upon 1:50,000 scale coverage. Most of the entities can be identified and located by the approved name or a recognizable variant of the approved name on one of the following sources: 1. Carte de la Melanesie au 1: 1 00, 000, A rchipel des APPROVED FOR RELEASE: 2007/02/09: CIA-RDP01-00707R000100160004-7 Nouvelles Hebrides, compiled and published by the Institut Geographique National, Paris. Some sheets have UTM grid overprint and English marginal notes, but no names or name changes, added by the Director of Military Survey, Ministry of Defence, United Kingdom, 1960-71. 2. Carte de la Melanesie au 1:50,000, Archipel des Nouvelles Hebrides, Institut Geographique National, Paris, 1968-69. 3, New Hebrides Condominium, Directorate of Overseas Surveys, U.K., 1971; scale: c. 1 :4,000,000 4, Joint Operations Graphic-Ground, Prepared under the direction of the Department of Defense and published by the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, Saint Louis, Missouri, 1968-70; 4 sheets (partial coverage); scale: 1:250,000. In terpretation of entries It has been necessary to express in code numbers and letters some of the information in the gazetteer in order to accommodate it to the machine method of tabulation, Name.-Approved standard names and unapproved variant names appear in the first column. The variant names are always cross-referenced to the standard names by use of the word "see." Names containing generic elements preceding the specific term (except names of populated places) are alphabetized by the specific part; thus Baie Ver, the name of a cove, is listed as Ver, Baie, Where part of the name is underlined, the use of the part not underlined is optional, Where two or more names are approved for a feature, each is identified in parentheses and any or all may be used. APPROVED FOR RELEASE: 2007/02/09: CIA-RDP01-00707R000100160004-7 - Diacritical marks occurring in names in New Hebrides are the acute accent ('), the grave accent ("'), the circumflex (^), the dieresis ("), and the cedilla (~), They should be used with both capital and lowercase letters, French particles in their various forms (de, d', du, des, ii, au, aux, Ie, la, I', les) should begin with lowercase letters except when they occur as the first element in a name, All other words should begin with capital letters. ~ - Designation.- The second column contains designations or abbreviations of designations, as listed below. Since practi- cally all geographic terms have varied meanings, the senses in which the designator terms are used and the range of features to which they are applied in this gazetteer are stated in the list to reduce ambiguity. The distinctions that can be made in a given gazetteer will vary with the quality of the maps of the area and with the nature of the entities that are named. Some of the features named in this gazetteer do not fit precisely into categories used to designate them and others could be designated in two or more ways, ADMD first-order administrative division (circonscription) ANCH anchorage (place within a harbor or roadstead where ships may anchor) AREA area (tract of land identified by a name, but without homogeneous character or established boundaries;
