MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Select Committee Testimony of 7 February 1974
1. This, the fourth day of hearings, was resumed in the Minority
Counsel's office with Mr. Jacob Esterline as the sole witness. Prior to
the swearing in, Senator Baker said he would be on the speech circuit during
the 10-day Lincoln recess, but wanted to get together concerning future
plans.
2. Jacob Esterline:
Mr. Esterline testified from 1020 hours until about 1300 hours
and was an outstanding witness. He was questioned vigorously and in depth
on various phrases used in CIA memoranda relating to Eugene Martinez.
He laid many of the counsel's bugaboos about us to rest. , The price was
to permit Mr. Esterline to testify about certain operational matters, relation-
ships, and concerns so that the counsel could place in perspective the words
and events which gave rise to their suspicions. Finally, Esterline made a
convincing closing statement on the Agency's truly apolitical service to all
Administrations, tilting toward neither party. I think it had its effect.
3. Other Points:
(a) There apparently is conflict between ours and the
testimony of others concerning Martinez' car at the Miami
Airport. (Esterline knew that the car was equipped with a
working alarm system, which was a surprise to counsel.)
(b) It will soon become quite clear to the counsels that
they need to interview Mr. Cord Meyer, because Meyer was
the source of the instruction to Larry Sternfield to Esterline
to "cool it" on Howard Hunt; and Meyer also had a lunch with
Hunt concerning the Mullen Company.
