1. (Internal Use Only - JSW) advised that Walter

Moreland of GSA had a query from James Guirard, in the office of
Representative Edwin Willis, as to possible early termination of a
lease. Apparently no particular event occasioned the call and Moreland
advised that at the present time there were no plans for earlier termina-
tion which was scheduled for 2 November. did indicate that (b)(3)
was considering ways of possible extension. (b)(6)
2. (Unclassified - JSW) James Gartland, Administrative
Assistant to Senator Thomas J. Dodd called to say that
, wished to be
in touch
with someone in the Agency to discuss possible sale by the company
of equipment referred to as surveillance receivers. It was agreed that
Gartland would hay be in touch with me and I would take care of
it since apparently was not in his office during the day.
3. (Unclassified - JSW) Jay Sourwine, Senate Internal Security
Subcommittee staff, called wishing as soon as possible a copy of the
text of a new confession by Captain Bucher which is being put out by
the North Koreans. I indicated we would get right on it and be back in
touch.
4. (Confidential - GLC) Handcarried to Donald O'Donnell, Senate
Permanent Investigations Committee staff, the Director's response to
Senator McClellan's request for updated information on the threat to the
U.S. fleet. On the basis of a quick review, O'Donnell said this appeared
to serve their purposes nicely and expressed their appreciation.

5. (Unclassified - GLC) Checked on the possibility of getting
together with Senator Edward Brooke this week. The Senator has gone
to Massachusetts for several days and is in the process of pulling
together his notes on his recent trip. He indicated he would be happy
to get together with us at a mutually convenient time upon his return.
It was learned that State Department has also been in contact with the
Senator to obtain any impressions he formed as a result of his trip.
6. (Unclassified - GLC) Talked with Senator Daniel Inouye's
secretary and learned that the Senator, while recovering nicely from
his recent illness, is working on a limited schedule and is making no
appointments for the time being.
7. (Unclassified - GLC) Checked on Senator J. W. Fulbright
and found that he is leaving today for Arkansas and will not return to
Washington until late Wednesday night. We expect to be back in touch
with his staff on Thursday.
8. (Secret - GLC) Met with Bill Spell, in the office of Senator
John Stennis, briefing him on the special clearances he has been given
and obtained the necessary documentation from him.
9. (Unclassified - GLC) Mr. Vitali, in the office of Senator
Edward Kennedy, called and asked if we could make arrangements for
an employment interview for sometime this week. Arrangements
are being made to have meet with of the
Washington Recruitment Office.

10. (Confidential - JGO) Mr. Charles Johnson, Staff Director, (b)(6)
House Post Office and Civil Service Committee, and Mr. Bun Bray,
Manpower Subcommittee staff, visited the Agency for briefings with
Calomel White and Mr. Bannerman concerning the general security problems
of the Agency and the impact of S. 1035 in its present form. The briefings
were well received by Mr. Johnson and Mr. Bray, who advised in essence
that on presentation by the DCI, should hearings be scheduled, they would
foresee no problem at this time in exemption of the Agency from the Act.

11. (Confidential - JGC)) In response to a query from
Representative James Fulton (R., Pa.), advised Mr. Richard P. Hines,
House Science and Astronautics Committee staff, that the Soviet research
vessel Vityaz made three voyages during 1967, two to the Indian Ocean
and one to the Sea of Japan. Also advised that the Soviets have approximately
35 communication type vessels and that two are off our coast. Mr. Hines
expressed his appreciation for the rapid response and indicated that he
would not attribute the information to us in responding to Mr. Fulton in
Pittsburgh.
