Soviet Perceptions of German Revanchism
To Soviet ears, the first verse of the West German national
'anthem, "Deutschlandlied" (formerly "Deutschland, Deutschland
liber AIles") sounds like a revanchist call to war. Because of its
association with the Nazi Third Reich, West Germany substituted
the third verse as the official words in 1952. Recently, however,
the first verse has begun being taught in West German schools in
the state of Baden-Wiirttemberg.

Gob Mann (son of author Thomas Mann and a leading figure on
the center-left of West German politics):
"Compared with the French, British, and US anthems, the
German piece is relatively harmless and unmilitaristic.
West German national anthem, first stanza:
"From the Maas (Meuse River) to the Memel (Neman River),
From the Etsch (Adige River) to the Belts (Danish Straits)--
Germany, Germany over all,
Over all in the world!"
