(U) I am pleased to inform you that Courtney Simmons Elwood has been confirmed by the Senate today to be our next
General Counsel. Com iney is a tremendously accomplished attorney with experience in both private practice and public
service. She was most recently a partner in the firm Kellogg, Hansen, Todd, Figel & Frederick, PLLC. She joined the
firm in 1996 after clerking for Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist on the Supreme Court of the United States and for
Judge J. Michael Luttig on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. From 2001 to 2007, she returned
to the government to serve in a number of positions, including Associate Counsel to the President, Deputy Counsel to
the Vice President, and Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to the Attorney General. She is a 1994 graduate of Yale
Law School, and a 1990 summa cum laude graduate of Washington and Lee University.
(U) I am thrilled that Courtney is joining our team, and I know she is excited to be working with us. We look forward to
her swearing-in and first day on the job.
(UNFOU0) I would also like to thank Dan Richard for stepping in to be Acting General Counsel for the last four
months while Courtney's nomination was pending. Dan has been a tremendous help to me and the rest of the senior
leadership team since I began my work here. He has provided me with excellent counsel, sound judgment, and wise
advice. I cannot thank him enough for his remarkable work. I am glad that we will continue to have his wise counsel as
he resumes his duties as Senior Deputy General Counsel.
