ROMANIA: Securitate Back in Business
Continued antiregime demonstrations arc prompting the ruling
National Salvation Front (FSN) to turn for support to former dictator
Ceausescu's ruthless secret police.
Comment: The current low profile of the Securitate is likely to
change if. as is likely, the FSN continues to come under attack for its
halfhearted support for democratic reform. Involvement of Securitate
personnel in containing unrest greatly increases the likelihood that
antigovernment demonstrations will turn violent. As was the case
during the overthrow of Ceausescu, the Romanian military could play
the key role in the FSN's survival.
